The UK has no digital nomad visa — but 6 months on an ETA, Youth Mobility, Skilled Worker routes all work. Plus the honest reality for remote workers.

No Dedicated DN Visa

Unlike Portugal, Spain, Greece, Croatia and 30+ other countries, the UK has never introduced a digital nomad visa. There is no route designed specifically for location-independent remote workers. UK Home Office policy has been "you need a job offer or family tie".

⚠️ Don't try the "visitor" loophole for 6 months of remote work. Border Force questions extended visits; repeated 6-month visits can trigger refusal of future entry.

Your 3 Realistic Options

Option 1: UK ETA (6 months, visitor)

  • Cost: £16, valid 2 years
  • Legality: grey — visitor visa doesn't permit "work"
  • Reality: short remote work tolerated during a holiday; long stays for remote work not
  • Best for: 2-8 weeks test drive in the UK

Option 2: Youth Mobility Scheme (2 years)

  • Cost: £298 + £2,070 IHS = £2,368 total
  • Eligible: Australia, NZ, Canada, Japan, S. Korea, Hong Kong, Taiwan (ballot), etc., aged 18-30 or 35
  • Legality: fully legal to do any remote work or self-employment
  • Best for: eligible young nomads who want 2 full years

Option 3: Skilled Worker visa (with sponsor)

  • Cost: £719-1,420 visa + £1,035/year IHS
  • Catch: need a UK employer willing to sponsor
  • Salary floor: £38,700
  • Reality: possible if your company has a UK entity; harder for pure remote freelancers

Best UK Cities

  • London — global city, expensive, unmatched networking
  • Manchester — tech scene growing, 40% cheaper than London
  • Edinburgh — scenic, safe, tech hub, Fringe energy
  • Bristol — creative, foodie, sustainable vibe
  • Brighton — beach + London access, LGBTQ+ friendly
  • Lisbon/Porto, Portugal — if you decide UK is too restrictive

Costs & Taxes

CityMonthly budget (single)Monthly (couple)
London£2,800-4,000£5,000-7,500
Manchester£1,800-2,400£3,500-5,000
Edinburgh£2,000-2,800£4,000-5,800
Bristol£2,000-2,600£4,000-5,500
Brighton£1,900-2,500£3,800-5,200

Tax reality: spend under 183 days/year in the UK = usually not UK tax resident. Over 183 days = UK taxes on worldwide income. Combine with home country filing obligations.

Alternatives

  • Portugal D8 (digital nomad visa) — €3,040/month income required, 1 year renewable 5 years
  • Spain Digital Nomad Visa — €2,646/month income, 1 year renewable 5 years
  • Croatia DN Visa — €2,800/month income, 1 year maximum
  • Estonia Digital Nomad Visa — €3,500/month income, 1 year
  • Czech Zivno visa — freelance route, complex but long-term option
  • Ireland — no DN visa but 90-day visa-waiver; cheaper than UK for short stays
🇪🇺 EU nomad reality: If you can't get a UK route, Portugal/Spain/Greece give you full Schengen access for 1-2 years. You can visit the UK on an ETA during that — best of both worlds.
