Why Visit Oxford?

Oxford is the English-speaking world's oldest university city — teaching since the 11th century. 38 colleges, honey-stone quads, the Bodleian Library, a cover role in Harry Potter, Alice in Wonderland and Inspector Morse. Smaller and prettier than Cambridge; larger and more varied than Bath.

The university colleges dominate the centre — some charge entry (Christ Church £18, Magdalen £8) but others are free. Stay near the High Street or Jericho (quieter, foodie).

Best time: April-June (gardens bloom, summer punting starts), September (term starts, atmospheric). August is crowded and many colleges close for conferences.

Food & Drink

Must-try food

  • Pie at The Eagle & Child — Tolkien & C.S. Lewis's pub. £12-16.
  • Ben's Cookies — Oxford institution at the Covered Market. £2.50.
  • Oxford Blue cheese — local blue cheese at Covered Market cheesemonger.

  • Afternoon tea at The Old Parsonage — quintessential Oxford. £38.

Must-try drinks

  • Real ale at The Turf Tavern — hidden since 1381, Clinton famously didn't inhale here.
  • Craft beer at The Star Inn, Jericho.
  • Cocktail at The Rickety Press — Jericho speakeasy.
  • Pimm's at Magdalen Bridge — classic summer while watching punts.
🚣 Punting rule: Stand on the platform at the back. Push the pole into the riverbed, lift, repeat. Novices often drop the pole — save the extortionate £40 replacement fee by being prepared to let the pole go and swim after it.

Day Trips

  • Blenheim Palace (20 min) — Churchill's birthplace, UNESCO.
  • Cotswolds (30 min) — honey-stone villages.
  • Cambridge (2.5 hr) — Oxford's rival.
