Why Visit York?

York is England's best-preserved medieval city — Roman walls you can walk in full loop, the largest Gothic cathedral in northern Europe, Viking heritage, ghost-story alleys (the Shambles), and a chocolate-making history (KitKat, Terry's Chocolate Orange, Rowntree). 2,000 years of layered history in a 2-mile walkable core.

Stay inside the city walls for full atmosphere. The Shambles is touristy but photogenic; Micklegate is quieter. Everything is walkable in 20 minutes.

Best time: April-October for walking the walls, October for half-term and the Food & Drink Festival, December for St Nicholas Fair Christmas Market.

Area-by-area

  • Inside the walls — Very safe day and night.
  • Micklegate weekend nights — Stag/hen do central, loud not dangerous.
  • Walls walk — Safe but stop before dark — some sections unlit.
