Can Visitors Extend
The UK Standard Visitor Visa is strict: you cannot extend beyond the initial 6 months in almost all circumstances. The visa is designed for short visits, and the Home Office expects you to leave and re-apply if you need to return.
Switching Visa Categories
The general rule: you cannot switch from a visitor visa to a work, study or settlement visa inside the UK. You must leave and apply in your home country.
Narrow exceptions where in-country switching is allowed:
- From Student (Tier 4) to Graduate or Skilled Worker
- From Skilled Worker to Innovator Founder
- From Family visa routes
- From the Youth Mobility Scheme to Skilled Worker (if sponsored)
FLR Applications
"FLR" means "Further Leave to Remain" — the formal name for most UK visa extensions. Common FLR routes:
| Application | Fee (2026) | IHS per year |
|---|---|---|
| FLR(M) Family/Partner | £1,048 | £1,035 |
| FLR(O) Other/Visitor exceptional | £1,048 | £1,035 |
| FLR(FP) Family/Private life | £1,048 | £1,035 |
| Skilled Worker extension | £827-1,500 | £1,035 |
| Student extension | £490 | £776 |
Overstaying Penalties
The UK takes overstaying seriously. Even a short overstay has long-term consequences:
- Under 30 days: creates a record that may affect future visa applications
- 30-90 days: likely 1-5 year re-entry ban
- 90+ days: 10-year re-entry ban to the UK
- Entering when banned: criminal offence
- Record-keeping: biometric data is stored — you cannot hide it
