Why Visit Edinburgh?

Edinburgh is one of Europe's most beautiful capitals — a UNESCO World Heritage city built on extinct volcanoes, with a medieval Old Town, Georgian New Town and a castle on a rock in the middle of it all. In August the city balloons to triple its size for the world's biggest arts festival. The rest of the year it's walkable, atmospheric and perfect for whisky, ghost tours and Harry Potter pilgrimages.

Stay in the Old Town near the Royal Mile for atmosphere and walkability, or the New Town for elegant Georgian streets and better restaurants. You can walk almost everywhere; Arthur's Seat (the volcano) is a 30-minute hike from Holyrood Palace.

Best time: May-June for long daylight and flowers, August for the Fringe (if you don't mind crowds), December for Christmas markets and Hogmanay. Avoid February (dark, cold, quiet).

Safety in Edinburgh

Edinburgh safety: Very safe compact city. Cowgate/Grassmarket can get rowdy on weekend nights (stag-do territory) but violence is rare. Pickpocketing is limited to peak Fringe crowds. Arthur's Seat in fog is the biggest real risk — bring waterproofs.

Area-by-area

  • Old Town & New Town — Very safe day and night, heavy foot traffic.
  • Cowgate at night — Busy, drunken; keep wits about you. Usual nightlife caution.
  • Arthur's Seat — Safe but weather can turn fast. Waterproofs + grippy shoes.
  • Leith — Gentrified — safe; some quieter streets feel lonely late.
📱 Emergency: 999 (police/fire/ambulance), 111 (NHS), 101 (non-emergency police). Edinburgh has 24/7 A&E at the Royal Infirmary.

Food & Drink

Must-try food

  • Haggis, neeps & tatties — offal sausage, turnips, potatoes. Try The Witchery or Howies. £15-22.
  • Scottish breakfast — like full English but with haggis and tattie scones. £9-14.
  • Scottish salmon & smoked fish — The Seafood Ristorante or Ondine. £22-35.
  • Fish and chips at The Pier (Leith) — best in Scotland, arguably. £12-18.
  • Cranachan — whipped cream, oats, raspberries, whisky. National dessert.

Must-try drinks

  • Single malt whisky — Scotch Whisky Experience on the Royal Mile. £20-65 for tasting flights.
  • Real ale in a historic pub — The Sheep Heid Inn (1360), The Guildford Arms. £4.50-6.
  • Craft beer — Innis & Gunn, Pilot, Campervan Brewery. £5-7.
  • Gin — Edinburgh Gin distillery tour + tasting in the Old Town.
🥃 Whisky rule: Don't add ice — a splash of water opens the flavour. Single malts are a regional thing: Speyside is light, Islay is smoky, Highland is balanced. Ask the bartender for a recommendation by flavour, not by brand.

Day Trips

  • Loch Lomond (1h15) — Scotland's largest loch, West Highland Way start point.
  • Stirling Castle (1 hr) — William Wallace heritage, Old Town, smaller than Edinburgh's.
  • Glasgow (50 min train) — grittier, artier sibling city; Kelvingrove Museum is world-class.
  • Highland day tour (11 hr) — Loch Ness, Glencoe, the Trossachs. GetYourGuide from £50.
