Is the Tube Safe?

The London Tube is one of the world's safer metro systems. Modern fleet, CCTV throughout, transport police, busy stations. Violent crime extremely rare. The realistic threat is petty theft, especially during peak hours and tourist hotspots.

Pickpocket Prevention

• Keep phones in zipped/secured pockets — back pocket = stolen pocket
• Watch backpacks during peak rush — wear in front of you
• Avoid Oxford Circus/Tottenham Court Rd at peak — pickpocket hotspots
• Don't use phone at platform edge — moped phone-snatchers exist
• Cards in inner pockets only — not back pockets
• Be aware of distractions (someone bumping you, asking time) — common technique

Late-Night Travel

• Tube runs ~5:30am-midnight Mon-Sat
• Night Tube Fri/Sat 24h on Jubilee, Victoria, Central, Northern, Piccadilly lines
• Sit in busy carriage — ride near driver if alone late
• Help cord in every carriage — alerts driver
• If empty/quiet line late — Uber may be safer choice
• Night buses (N-routes) — cheap, well-used, safe

Etiquette

• STAND on RIGHT, WALK on LEFT on escalators — strict London rule
• Don't block doors — let passengers off first
• No food/drink on the Tube (unwritten rule, broadly observed)
• Quiet conversations — Brits don't talk loudly on Tube
• Phone calls — short and quiet only
• Don't blast music from headphones — leakage is rude

• Lost property — TfL lost property office, 2-day wait
