Punting is the most quintessentially Oxford summer activity — a flat-bottomed wooden boat (a "punt") propelled by pushing a 16-ft pole into the riverbed. Done since the 1860s. Two main rivers: the Cherwell (popular tourist) and the Isis (Thames at Oxford, more for rowing).

Where to Hire
- Magdalen Bridge Boathouse — central, busiest. £32/hour. Punts on the Cherwell.
- Cherwell Boathouse — north Oxford, quieter waters. £28/hour. Better food café.
- Salters Steamers (Folly Bridge) — punts on the Isis (Thames). Less crowded waters.
How to Punt
- Stand at the back of the punt on the small platform (the "till")
- Hold the pole vertical with both hands
- Drop the pole into the riverbed (it's about 2-3 m deep here)
- Push the boat forward as you walk a few steps along the platform
- Lift the pole out as the boat moves past it
- Use the pole as a rudder by trailing it behind to steer
- Repeat. The boat naturally drifts straight if you push consistently
⚠️ Don't lose the pole: If it gets stuck in mud, let it go and let the punt drift. Better to swim back for it (£40 replacement fee at most boathouses) than fall in mud-deep water trying to retrieve it forcibly.

- Magdalen Bridge to Cherwell Boathouse — 60-90 min, scenic, lots of trees, multiple meadows
- Magdalen Bridge to Mesopotamia — 30 min, easier, see Magdalen College from the river
- Cherwell Boathouse south — towards Oxford, view of the colleges
- Cherwell to Wolvercote — longer (2+ hour) escape from city
Tips
- Book ahead in summer — peak weekends sell out
- Bring drinks + food (most allow picnics on board)
- Wear shoes that grip — wet platforms slippery
- Don't stand on the pole-pushing platform if drunk
- Hire chauffeured first time if you don't want stress
- Strawberries + Pimm's = quintessential Oxford punting setup
🚣 Cambridge alternative: Cambridge punts have you stand at the front (different design), and the pole is shorter. Oxford = back-platform; Cambridge = front-platform. Don't mix them up.
