Planning Your Trip
The Scottish Highlands are vast — larger than Wales — and sparsely populated. Driving is the only practical way to see them. Distances feel short on a map but single-track roads slow you down. Always check fuel, and book accommodation well ahead in summer.
- Start point: Edinburgh (3hr drive to Inverness) or fly direct to Inverness (INV)
- Hire car: Edinburgh is cheapest; Inverness saves driving time
- Fuel: Carry extra; stations can be 30+ miles apart in the west
- Connectivity: 4G patchy; download offline maps + podcasts
- Daylight: June 4:30am-10pm; December 9am-3:30pm
Isle of Skye
The Isle of Skye is Scotland's most famous island — dramatic pinnacles, coastal cliffs, green fields and Michelin-star cooking. Connected to the mainland by the Skye Bridge (free since 2004).
- Old Man of Storr — iconic rock pinnacle, 90-min hike
- Quiraing — surreal landslip landscape, moderate hike loop
- Fairy Pools — crystal-clear rock pools near Glenbrittle
- Neist Point — lighthouse at the westernmost tip
- Portree — colourful harbour capital, best base
- Dunvegan Castle — chief of Clan MacLeod, 800 years
The NC500
The North Coast 500 is a 516-mile circular route starting and ending in Inverness, hugging the northern coastline of Scotland. Called one of the world's best road trips.
- Inverness → Ullapool (west coast) — 2 hrs direct, half-day with stops
- Ullapool → Durness — beaches, Smoo Cave, Ardvreck Castle
- Durness → John O'Groats (north coast) — dramatic cliffs
- John O'Groats → Inverness (east coast) — gentler, faster drive
- Total time: minimum 5 days; 7-10 recommended
Glencoe
Glencoe is a U-shaped glacial valley on the main road from Glasgow/Edinburgh to Fort William and Skye. Site of the 1692 Glencoe Massacre (MacDonalds by government soldiers). Stunningly cinematic — used in Harry Potter, Skyfall, Outlander.
- Three Sisters viewpoint — classic Glencoe photo
- Signal Rock — short walk, historic views
- Buachaille Etive Mòr — iconic pyramid mountain
- Glencoe Visitor Centre — history + ranger-led walks
