Can You Work Remotely Here

The UK's position on tourist remote work is legally ambiguous:

  • Visitors (ETA/Standard Visitor Visa) cannot "work" — but "work" means performing a role for a UK company
  • Remote work for a foreign employer while on holiday is technically disallowed but rarely enforced
  • Border Force guidance (informal): short remote work during a holiday is tolerated, but don't mention at the border
  • Never: long stays primarily for remote work, or working for UK companies, without the correct visa
⚠️ Tell Border Force you're on holiday — not "working remotely for a month". They WILL investigate and may refuse entry. Technical truth: "visiting friends and staying connected with work" is safer phrasing.

WiFi & Internet

  • Average UK broadband: 80-150 Mbps (fibre)
  • Top tier (in cities): 900 Mbps - 1 Gbps
  • Mobile 4G: covers 99% of UK population
  • 5G: all major cities, expanding
  • Public WiFi: everywhere — pubs, cafés, trains, Underground stations
  • Train WiFi: free on most routes but slow
  • Airbnb/hotel WiFi: usually fibre, check before booking longer stays

Best Cities

  • London — best networking, worst value. Expect £2,000-3,500/month living costs.
  • Manchester — vibrant, tech scene, £1,600-2,400/month
  • Edinburgh — scenic, compact, tech hub growing, £1,800-2,500
  • Bristol — creative, foodie, £1,800-2,500
  • Brighton — beach + London access (50 min train), £1,700-2,400
  • Liverpool — cheapest big-city option, £1,500-2,200
  • Cardiff — Welsh capital, £1,500-2,200
  • Glasgow — arty, affordable, £1,500-2,200

Tax Rules

Tax residency determines where you pay income tax. HMRC Statutory Residence Test:

  • Under 46 days in UK per tax year — never UK tax resident
  • 46-90 days — depends on "UK ties" (family, home, work days)
  • 91-182 days — more UK ties tip you to resident
  • 183+ days — automatically UK tax resident

If you become UK tax resident, you pay UK income tax on worldwide income (with potential double-tax relief via treaties). Most short-term remote workers (1-3 months) never become residents.

🧮 Tax tip: Double-taxation treaties exist with 130+ countries. You won't pay tax twice, but you might need to file in two places. Consult a cross-border tax specialist if spending 6+ months.
