How UK Visa Processing Works

The UK's visa system has three parts: the online application (gov.uk), the biometric appointment (at a commercial visa centre), and the decision (made by UK Visas and Immigration in the UK, then returned via the visa centre).

British embassies and consulates do NOT process visas themselves. They handle diplomatic, trade and consular work (helping British nationals).

VFS Global vs TLScontact

CompanyCountries
VFS GlobalMost countries: India, China, Pakistan, UAE, USA, Canada, Australia, most of Africa, SE Asia, Latin America
TLScontactMost of Europe (France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Netherlands, etc.), some African countries
Sopra SteriaUK-based biometric appointments (for in-country visa extensions)

Booking Appointments

  • Complete and pay for your online application at gov.uk
  • You'll be directed to your country's VFS Global or TLScontact site
  • Book the earliest available biometric appointment
  • Attend with passport + all supporting documents + appointment confirmation
  • Biometrics (fingerprints + photo) take about 15 minutes
  • Extra paid services available: premium lounge, document scanning, SMS updates
⚠️ Only use official sites. Scam sites charge hundreds of pounds for "application help". The real UK visa application is only at gov.uk. Biometrics only at official VFS Global, TLScontact or Sopra Steria centres.

Emergency Consular Help

If you're a British citizen in distress abroad (lost passport, arrested, victim of crime, medical emergency), contact your nearest British embassy or consulate. For non-British citizens, the UK embassy cannot help — contact your own country's embassy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I apply for UK visas at the British embassy?

No — the UK outsources visa processing to commercial partners (VFS Global in most countries, TLScontact in some). The embassy handles diplomatic and consular matters only.

Can I walk in without an appointment?

No — all UK visa biometric appointments must be booked online in advance via the VFS Global or TLScontact website.

What if my country doesn't have a UK visa centre?

You'll need to travel to the nearest centre in a neighbouring country. Gov.uk lists processing locations by nationality.

Does the British embassy give travel advice?

Yes — gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice has official advice for British citizens abroad. The embassy cannot recommend hotels or tours.
